A mainstream 3G solution has two receivers under the hood: a rake for R99 functions and an equalizer for HSPA functions. The unified receiver is the first 3G receiver that eliminates the rake, brings the equalizer performance to R99 space, and considerably shrinks the chip size. Within the unified receiver is a novel combination of the FDE (frequency-domain equalizer) and the L-rake, which provides maximum performance under all corner cases, including for MIMO HSPA and multi-way soft handoff.
